Beatrice A. Islas
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Beatrice A. Islas a beloved wife, mother, sister and friend. Beatrice passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 1, 2024 after having managed a long-term illness. Beatrice, age 93, was born and raised in Nogales, Arizona on September 17, 1930 to parents Santiago and Elodia Alvarado. After graduating with honors from Nogales High School in 1949 she went on to attend Colegio Cabrera, a private school in Nogales, Sonora earning her business certification. She was promptly hired by the Capin corporation as an executive secretary to Mr. Jake Capin where she worked for several years until marrying Oscar, her high school sweetheart, in 1954.
Beatrice dedicated the majority of her life to caring for her family. She was a natural mother and made her children and grandchildren her first priority at all times. She instilled in her children the importance of good education and was an active supporter in her children’s extracurricular activities always volunteering for committees, sewing costumes, baking goods, and she never missed a parent teacher conference, of which there were many! She was an avid reader and an occasional bowler in her spare time. Another highlight of her social life was entertaining her Comadres at their monthly coffee sessions.
Her selfless generosity was reflected in her community pursuits as well, as represented in her volunteer roles with the Catholic Daughters of America and as a member of the Nogales chapter of Telecare, an organization dedicated to the care and well being of the elderly. At Telecare, she was a member of the Board of Directors and Secretary during her 20-year tenure with the organization. She often said one of the highlights of her day was the time she spent making phone calls to elderly community members and chatting with them about their day.
Beatrice is survived by her husband of 69 years of marriage, Mr. Oscar H. Islas and their eight children - Lorraine Islas, Oscar Islas Jr., Alex Islas, Malena Martinez (Paul), Marco Islas, (Diane), Gina Peterson (Spencer), Gloria Dicochea (Mario), and David Islas. In addition, she was a proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She also had two half siblings, Virginia Mastick and Dr. Simon Escalada. She was preceded in death by her sister Cristina Ruiz, and brothers Hector and Santiago Alvarado, as well as beloved grandson, Aaron Cavelero.
Beatrice was a dedicated parishioner of the Sacred Heart Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the church.
The Islas family extends their sincerest gratitude to Dependable Home Hospice for their professional medical attention and their gracious and compassionate care of our mother.
